Today was an incredibly fun day. After classes today, two of our girls decided to visit the salon not too far from us to get a "Russian" haircut for one of the girls and a lovely, bright manicure for the other. Once they returned, we got dressed up and decided to go the Bolshoi Theater (Большой Театр) to try to get "student rush tickets" to see Swan Lake. However, we were out of luck. It appears that they are sold out for the next several days.
Since we were all dressed up and it was still early, we decided to get some tea in the Gyum (ГУМ) shopping center. (Our tourguide from the other day had suggested a cafe in there). The Red Square was just across the street from us. As we approached it, we were stunned by the beautiful scene before us. While it was still fairly early in the evening, it was already dark. It was gently snowing. There were many Christmas lights. It had all the makings of a winter wonderland scene. :) After taking quite a few pictures in the Square, we enjoyed our hot beverages inside. As we sat there recalling humorous tales and both amusing and be amused by our incredibly awkward waiter, we decided we wanted some Georgian food. A good friend of mine had suggested a place on Stariy Arbat - Genаtsvali (Генацвале). It was incredible. From the outside it resembled a ride from Disneyworld (the Pirates comparison made on EB's blog seemed particularly fitting!). The inside has a unique setting and atmosphere that makes you feel like you are stepping into a different world. There was a mini pond with shockingly large fish and a lovely bridge. Most of us had soup and xachapuri (a fabulous Georgian recipe - dough with cheese inside. The type of dough and cheese make it very different from any kind of cheesy bread or cheese pizza that Americans generally eat). It was delicious. While the restaurant was very pricey, it has a claim to fame. Condoleezza Rice, Will Smith and Lady Gaga have all eaten there! Moscow is full of wonderful places :)
